MAILBOXES & SNOW REMOVAL
The Carlton County Transportation Department would like to remind everyone that mailboxes and their supports are the property of the mail route patron and are placed within the road right-of-way at the owner’s risk.
Damages resulting from snow debris and the heavy snow pushed off the road from the plows is not the responsibility of the County, however we are willing to evaluate mailbox supports damaged by County equipment that made actual contact on a case-by-case basis if the mailbox supports were properly located and installed. A properly installed mailbox support, per the Carlton County Mailbox Policy, is:
1. A swing away post.
2. Has an elevation of 42 to 48 inches above the roadway surface.
3. Is 8 to 12 inches outside of the paved or aggregate shoulder or 6 to 12 inches back from the face of the curb.
If your mailbox support meets these three qualifications above, damage must be reported within 48 hours of a storm event for consideration for repair.
While we are willing to repair mailbox supports, we do not replace the mailbox itself, that is the owner’s risk of placing their personal property in our right-of-way.
Please share this information with others you know who may not be informed. Your help with keeping public roadways safe is greatly appreciated and you can contact Carlton County Transportation at (218) 384-9150 or email transportation@co.carlton.mn.us with any questions.
