Suicide Prevention
If you are in a suicide crisis, please call or text 988, or chat here. If it is an immediate crisis, please contact 911. Mobile crisis teams are also available for Adults and Youth across MN. Maps for the state can be found here, and a map for Northeast Minnesota can be found here.
General Suicide Prevention Information:
TXT4Life began as a program funded under a Garrett Lee Smith SAMHSA Grant for the seven counties (Aitkin-Carlton-Cook-Itasca-Koochiching-Lake-St. Louis), and four Tribes (Fond du Lac, Red Lake, Bois Forte, Grand Portage) of Northeast Minnesota. Currently, the program is funded by State Legislative funding that was allocated in both the 2013 and 2015 Omnibus Bills. This funding has allowed for the expansion of the program to all of Minnesota. The coverage to all Minnesota counties by Regional Coordinators began implementation through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services in April 2018.
Regional Coordinators reach students through school presentations where education about suicide prevention and steps to help a friend in crisis are given, as well as resources including the text line information, mobile crisis, and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The Regional Coordinators also work with schools on a variety of other prevention, intervention and postvention strategies and support.
Trainings are available to anyone and given across the region and state. The trainings include, but are not limited to: QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer - both in-person and online options), safeTALK, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), Mental Health First Aid (Teen, Youth & Adult), Changing the Narrative, and others. Training, education, marketing, local/regional and state collaborations, and innovation have made this project a rapid success.
UPDATE: As of Fall 2022, Regional Coordinators will be promoting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for any calls, texts of chats. The Crisis Text Line is an additional crisis text resource, and can be accessed by texting HOME to 741741. The Minnesota Department of Health will include updates for 988 here, and a Frequently Asked Questions Document can be accessed here.
Reminder: A Crisis Text Line Distance Learning Toolkit has been created if the need arises. Here is a link to a google form to access the Crisis Text Line toolkit. Here is a direct link to the video presentation. Please call or email Ali (contact information at bottom of page) for questions and opportunities related to Crisis Text Line presentations, suicide prevention/intervention trainings, or other outreach opportunities. Also contact her if you need Crisis Text Line marketing materials (posters, bracelets, etc.).
