Requests for Public Information

Requests for public information on individuals or for specific reports, can be made in person or in writing using the Carlton County Data Request Form. The request form can either be dropped off at the Sheriff's Office, mailed to the Sheriff's Office, or emailed to Sheriff's Office Records. The request must have the  full name and date of birth of the individual the public information is requested upon. Requests for specific reports will only be given out if there is a final disposition (case is closed) on file.

Fees charged for records requests will be the actual costs of searching for and retrieving government data, including the cost of employee time, and for making, certifying, and electronically transmitting the copies of the data or the data; unless 100 or fewer pages of black and white, letter or legal size paper copies are requested in which case 25 cents for each page copied will be charged.

Background Checks

Local background checks include any contacts and / or arrests of an individual, depending upon the request, by the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office only. A request to run a criminal history must be made with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Residence Check

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to offer you the ability to have our deputies to check your home while you are away on vacation or other absences. City residents should check with their local police department to see if the department provides residence checks. Call 911 to setup a residence check for your house.

Civilian Fingerprinting

Call Carlton County Jail to make an appointment at 218-384-4560. Must have Identification and Fingerprint Card. The cost is $25 cash.

State Victim Notification Service - (VINE)

The Minnesota State Victim Notification Service (VINE) is a service through which victims of crime can use the telephone or internet to search for information regarding their offender’s custody status and register to receive telephone and email notification when their offender’s custody status changes. This service is brought to you by your local Sheriff Kelly Lake. The VINE Toll Free Number for Minnesota VINE is 877-664-8463.
